Five Galleons departed on 13 December 1577 from the port of Plymouth in England under the direction of Francis Drake aboard the galleon The Pelican.
When the expedition crossed the Strait of Magellan, The Pelican was renamed Golden Hind by Drake in honour of one of the voyage's commanders, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms included a golden doe.
The Golden Hind is famous because it circumnavigated the Earth in the years 1577-1580.
After travelling 40,000 miles, Drake returned to England in 1580 with loot made of treasures and conquered lands. In 1581, Queen Isabella IEra conferred the title of knight on the bridge of the Golden Hind.
