On April 10, 1912, the Titanic, the world's largest and most luxurious transatlantic ship, embarked on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
An event that caused the death of 1495 people, and gave rise to the greatest legend in the history of maritime navigation. The Titanic had lifeboats for only 1200 passengers, yet there were nearly 2223 on board.
In the early morning of April 15, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg off the coast of Newfoundland. The sinking of the Titanic is the largest in the history of peacetime shipping. 1518 people lost their lives. Only 711 of the 2223 people survived.
Myths and legends around the fatal sinking emerged, probably making the Titanic the most famous ship in the world.
For many years, historians, treasure hunters, oceanographers and entrepreneurs searched for traces of the shipwreck. Eventually, the remains of the ship were discovered on September 1, 1985 by Robert Ballard during a secret mission on behalf of the United States Army. The wreck of the Titanic was located at a depth of 3784 metres, some 800 km off the coast of Canada.
The lights of the Titanic went out a few minutes before it disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean, and with it the dream of reaching New York.
