Clock-Aero Ugears

We are proud to present the Ugears Aero Clock, a fully functional wall clock with pendulum. For years, we have kept hearing the same question from our loyal customers: "Can Ugears create a functional clock model kit that actually keeps the exact time?" A mechanical wooden clock that worked for a long time was the most popular model. Your dream was also our dream, and our team of dedicated Ugears engineers and designers worked hard to make this common dream come true.

The Clock-Aero is not only a mechanical model in 3D wood, or a pretty centerpiece. The Ugears Aero Clock is a real clock that you can assemble yourself, fix on a wall, go up, and then watch the seconds, minutes and hours go by. The Aero Clock is an ingenious puzzle and DIY clock mechanism, different from any other clock. It is a beautiful piece of precise engineering that reveals the operation of a weighted pendulum clock to builders and spectators. Like all Ugears models, it also has that extra touch of fantasy, to captivate and charm our growing legion of fans.

The Ugears Aero Clock, a wooden wall clock with pendulum that you assemble yourself, is timeless in its simple elegance. This beautiful and functional wooden wall clock model is for watchmakers, hobbyists, explorers, creatives and romantics of all stripes, anyone who is ready to take on new challenges and willing to take risks.

A little bit of history:

The theme of the Clock-Aero is ancient aeronautics. Take a trip back in time that captured France and England in 1783 on the occasion of the first free air balloon trip. Two years later Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries made the first air crossing of the English Channel.

The Ugears Clock-Aero kit finally celebrates the role of clocks in exploration. Did you know that the problem of calculating longitude, essential for accurate navigation at sea, was solved with a clock? The idea was proposed by the Dutch mathematician Gemma Frisius in 1530. But it wasn't until the mid-eighteenth century that the English watchmaker John Harrison developed a series of on-board clocks so accurate (accurate to a quarter of a second a day) that sailors could finally calculate their position at sea within a few miles. By knowing the exact time of return to London, and calculating the time at the current position with celestial observation, navigators could calculate where they were on the surface of the earth.

The Phoenicians as early as 600 BC had solved latitude with celestial calculus. They measured the altitude of the sun at noon, or the angle made between the North Star (or other sailing stars) and the horizon. But the problem of longitude will torment explorers for another 2000 years. Harrison eventually received the first prize of £20,000 (about £1.5 million today) established in the Parliament Longitude Act of 1714, after demonstrating the accuracy of his masterful clocks at sea. From now on, you too, become a watchmaker, with the Horloge-Aéro de Ugears!

How the Ugears Aero Clock works:

The force of gravity that pulls down a weighted bag drives this elegant Clock-Aero Ugears. Fill it with sand or salt. Lift the bag on its pulleys to wind the clock. The weight rotates a drive gear as it descends. This then rotates an exhaust wheel through a gearbox. The clock has an adjustable weighted pendulum that interacts with the escape wheel through the regular ticking of the anchoring mechanism. You can adjust the ticking action of the clock to the second, by sliding the upper and lower weights of the pendulum. The reducer also transmits the rotation to a disk of hours and a disk of minutes.

Our Clock-Aero has another interesting feature. Indeed the time is not read with rotating hands on a clock face. But rather a fixed pointer indicates the time on the disks of slow-spinning hours and minutes. In addition, these discs rotate counterclockwise. Did you know that before normalization, some clocks moved clockwise and others did not? In the role of the "cuckoo", the Horloge-Aéro Ugears presents a model of a hot air balloon. The suspended balloon descends quickly when the time rings, then slowly rises again over the next hour.

The Clock-Aero must be reassembled every 12 hours.

Technical info:
High-quality wood from sustainable sources is the Horloge-Aéro kit. There's everything you might need for assembly. In addition, we use a laser method to cut parts from a plywood board and thus provide accurate cuts. Then remove the parts from the boards and assemble them to create the complete model.

By assembling the Clock-Aero, you will learn the basic principles of watchmaking cogs. How the stabilizing influence of an oscillating pendulum works through a rocking anchor, locking and unlocking the gears of an exhaust one second at a time, thus regulating the (slow) descent of a weight as it drives both power gears and timing gears.

We love the steampunk sensibility and adventurous spirit of this wooden clock, and we think you'll love it too! Imagine yourself as an explorer of new horizons and a conqueror of the four winds. The case and intriguing mechanism of the wooden clock represent an air base located among the clouds.

The Ugears Clock-Aero with Pendulum is an exciting new addition to the Ugears collection of fascinating mechanical models, 3D puzzles, game accessories, wooden puzzle boxes, children's toys and STEM Lab educational model kits.
