The UH145 (militarized version of EUROCOPTER's EC 145) has been selected by the U.S. Army for its Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) equipment program. The contract covers the supply of 352 aircraft. The UH145 will replace the UH1H Huey and OH58 Kiowa. It was on Monday, December 11, 2006 that the first UH-145 was delivered to the U.S. Army. Traditionally, the latter gives its helicopters the name of an Indian tribe. The new aircraft, whose military designation is UH-72A, was named "Lakota" after a tribe of the Sioux people. The EC 145 is a multi-purpose twin-engine helicopter belonging to the 3-4 ton class with up to 10 seats for pilot(s) and passengers.
