The concept was outrageous, built at great expense of not one but 25 Le Mans challengers, thus qualifying for "sports car" status, bypassing the limit of a 3.0-liter prototype.
In one fell swoop, the resulting 917 with a displacement of 4.5 to 5 liters (the largest air-cooled racing car ever designed) made its rival prototypes obsolete. Truly one of the most iconic racing cars in motorsport history. If at the beginning it was a cumbersome beast, tamed for 1970, it had the measure of its rivals.
For two seasons he stomped on his opponents and won the world championship race after championship race, including Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, thereafter his speed described as "too fast" at over 240 mph led decision-makers to reject high-capacity race cars from endurance racing; at that time, it turned its attention to America where it smashed its rivals in turbocharged form, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest racing cars of all time.
