As early as the 1960s, the car ferry model began to spread in the Mediterranean.
At the beginning of 1965, the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte based in Marseille placed an order with the Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée, in La Seyne-sur-Mer, for a car ferry liner. The AVENIR will be his first car ferry and the last ship ordered by the company. Laid down on 4 November 1965, the AVENIR was launched on 21 June 1966 and delivered to the "Mixte" on 25 March 1967 (IMO- International Maritime Organization-6614815).

Let us use the words of its official presentation in 1967: "Designed today for the tourism of tomorrow, the Avenir is an authentic luxury liner with all the refinements of comfort. But it is also a car ferry: the modern traveler, who no longer separates from his car, will get on board directly." Fully air-conditioned and designed to carry 918 passengers (376 in cabin class, 364 seated and 178 in dormitories), it can carry 130 vehicles that access the ship either through a ramp door 2.60 meters high, located at the stern, or through 6 side doors (110 in "garage" and 20 in hold). Cabin class passengers have at their disposal a dining room with 200 seats, two lounges, one with a dance floor, a lido bar with swimming pool, a shop and a telecine.

Economy Class passengers enjoy a bar and brasserie with telecine. The inaugural cruise of the AVENIR, bound for the Balearic Islands and Tunis, takes place from 14 to 17 April. On 18 April, she made her first commercial voyage from Marseille to Tunis. On 1 July 1969 L'Avenir was transferred to the Compagnie Générale TransMéditerranéen (CGTM), when the Compagnie de Navigation Mixte merged and the Mediterranean services of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Serving between France, Algeria and Tunisia, the AVENIR made its last arrival in Marseille in October 1975 before being disarmed and put up for sale. It was sold in January 1976 to the Italian company Trans Tirreno Express which sailed it between Italy and Greece under the name ESPRESSO CORINTO. Its home port was Cagliari.

Immobilized in 1981 due to TTE's financial difficulties, the ship remained decommissioned for nearly three years before being bought by the Panamanian company Marinvest Founds in 1984. Renamed SHAHRAZAD, it is used to transport Muslim pilgrims to the Red Sea. Her career ended on 21 September 1985 when she was wrecked off Jeddah after being ravaged by fire.
