Box boats Task Force Refueling at Sea 1986 1/400 Heller

The centerpiece of modern navies, the naval air group, or "Task Force", allows the projection of large forces in the context of regional crises or more serious conflicts. Articulated around one or more aircraft carriers, this assembly is protected by anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare escorts, and followed by a wing train responsible for refueling at sea. From the sixties, the French Navy formed such groups, the new aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch being frequently accompanied by Tartar recast escorts, named after the anti-aircraft system equipping the Kersaint and Dupetit-Thouars among others. Far from its home port and sometimes in hostile areas, it is then necessary to resupply the group with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and fresh food, this is the role of tankers, the first modern buildings equipped for this purpose being the Seine and the Saône. A delicate exercise, refueling at sea or RAM, sees several ships evolve in concert, the tanker being often framed by the aircraft carrier on one side and a squadron escort on the other. Fuel is transferred by means of flexible hoses, with goods transiting by means of pallets suspended by a network of cables. Finally, an important detail for all sailors embarked on these warships, the mail of the families arrives on board on the occasion of such supplies at sea!
