Construction of the frigate "La Fayette" began on 15 December 1990 and was commissioned on 15 December 1995. It was the first of a series of five ships named "F710 La Fayette", "F711 Surcouf", "F712 Courbet", "F713 Aconit" and "F714 Guépratte". These front-line warships, designed primarily to safeguard and protect the nation's interests in remote maritime areas and to resolve crises outside Europe, were gradually integrated into the Naval Action Force (French Naval Forces). They may also have had to support rapid reaction forces or protect commercial traffic, as well as conduct special operations or humanitarian missions.
