In 1845, under the command of Captain Sir John A. Franklin, the ships Terror and Erebus go in search of the famous Northwest Passage. These are the first ships equipped with auxiliary engines. They are reinforced with iron blades that protect them from ice and have provisions for three years of navigation.
They will be seen for the last time near Greenland before disappearing into the maze of Arctic ice.
The wreck of the ship H.M.S. Terror, who disappeared 168 years ago, was found on September 26, 2016 thanks to the collaboration of an Inuit hunter from the Arctic village of Gjoa Haven. The Terror is in good condition. We got images of the bridge and the interior where we can observe objects and intact parts of the ship.
The mystery of Franklin's tragic expedition remains. It may be that the archaeological study of the wreck of the Terror helps to clear it up.
Model based on the plans of Matthew Betts.
