This wooden mechanical model of a tyrannosaurus is powered by a metal spring that transmits power through a reducing gear, thus rotating the axis that drives the legs. An ingenious system of links and connections allows this king of dinosaurs to walk on his own two feet – the first biped in the Ugears collection! An eccentric gear swings the tail in sync with the legs, which helps the dinosaur keep its balance and not tip to the side, as in nature.

Measuring up to 13 meters long and weighing 9 metric tons, tyrannosaurs had the largest teeth of any carnivorous dinosaur, capable of tearing flesh and grinding bones. They also possessed a highly developed sense of smell, comparable to that of vultures, and an incredibly fine eyesight, superior to that of eagles. These animals were the supreme predators of the late Cretaceous, roaming what is now western North America, in environments ranging from bayous to semi-arid plains. Their gigantic hind legs and swinging tail made them efficient walkers, able to stalk their prey over long distances before getting closer to kill them in a burst of speed. They could also smell carrion at long distances and chase other predators out of the carcass, making them the brutes of the Cretaceous canteen.

This extraordinary model of a walking dinosaur is a self-winding wooden scale model of an adult Tyrannosaurus rex. The top of the tail hides the winding key. Remove the key and insert it into the ratchet mechanism on the left side of the dinosaur, making sure that the left femur head is clear of the opening (if necessary, toggle the on/off switch to the "on" position, then rotate the gear above the T-rex shoulders to move the leg). Toggle the on/off switch to the "off" position and rotate the mechanism half a dozen times clockwise, placing the key back in its place between the tail and the body. Place the Tyrannosaurus rex on a flat, smooth surface, holding the automaton by the body (do not squeeze the legs together!), flip the on/off switch and release. Your tyrannosaurus rex will walk away, looking for its next meal, tail swaying and jaws waving up and down in anticipation. It's actually quite terrifying!
