With its double row of bony protective plates along the spine and tail, the Stegosaurus is one of the most iconic dinosaurs in fossil history. Traversing the plains of North America and Europe some 150 million years ago, adult stegosaurs were up to 4 meters tall, 6 meters long, and weighed nearly 4 tons. Stegosaurus fed on ferns, mosses and cycads. Any carnivore brave or stupid enough to treat themselves to a stegosaurus steak was confronted with a formidable foe and risked being impaled by the sharp tips of its tail, which were up to a meter long. In fact, a fossilized specimen of Allosaurus was found with damaged vertebrae, in which a Stegosaurus tail tip fit perfectly! Did you know that paleontologists call these tail points "Thagomizers," in honor of cartoonist Gary Larson of "The Far Side"?

The Ugears Stegosaurus is a four-legged, spring-operated, wooden dinosaur automaton capable of walking up to a meter on a single wind. The winding key is located in the belly of the dinosaur, with winding slots on either side. The bony plate above the dinosaur's shoulder serves as an on/off switch. Push the plate back before giving up to ten U-turns to the key, then lay the stegosaurus on a flat surface, slide the shoulder plate forward and watch your living fossil drift away in search of its next meal! An eccentric gear causes the tail to oscillate in sync with the legs, allowing the dinosaur to walk realistically.

The overlapping plates on Stegosaurus Ugears are arranged in a double row, according to the current consensus of paleontologists. There's still a lot of debate as to whether it's defense, thermoregulation, or courtship, but we think the fact that one of these plates serves as a switch for the dinosaur is a fun innovation!
