Designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States to commemorate the centennial of American independence. Originally dull copper in color, the statue quickly took on a green patina. She holds a torch representing progress, and a tablet representing the rule of law, on which is inscribed the date of the Declaration of Independence: July 4, 1776. Her crown has seven rays, evoking the sun, the seven seas and the seven continents – Lady Liberty extends her light to the whole world. Under his feet is a broken chain, representing the emancipation of the slaves. It took six years to raise the funds for the construction of the pedestal and the completed statue was consecrated in 1886.
