This beautiful 3D wooden puzzle is a book-shaped steampunk combination box with a secret compartment, a multi-step opening sequence, and fascinating mechanical action. Your Book of Secrets opens with a three-digit combination on the spine of the book to release the secret key. Insert the key into the special slot and turn it counterclockwise to engage the opening mechanism, then turn the gears counterclockwise to open the book. Various windows on the box tell you if you have completed each step correctly. This 3D secret mechanical box, with its complex opening sequence, holds many mysteries and is both a fun way to store your belongings and a fun game to play with your friends or family by challenging them to discover the hidden features of the Book of Secrets. For the first time in Ugears history, we have used two colors of plywood (dark and light) to make this model even more special for you.

Books have been used to hide objects, in real life and in fiction, for almost as long as books have existed. Homeowners can hide valuables from burglars by hollowing out a book and placing it on a shelf with other books. The secret book is easy for the homeowner to find, but almost impossible for the burglar. In "The Matrix," Neo hides computer disks and money in a book, and who can forget the prison break in "The Shawshank Redemption," accomplished using a hammer hidden in a Bible, the pages of which are cut from Exodus. Everyone loves puzzles and riddles, and this Ugears secret book is just that, with a series of puzzles to solve to open the secret compartment and see what's inside!

You can set any three-digit combination on your Ugears Book of Secrets by removing the pin block inside the secret compartment. Turn the dials to the desired combination and reinsert the pin block. The key release mechanism will then work with your chosen combination. When you press the lever under the bottom of the book's spine, the key pops out of its slot at the top of the spine. The lever will not eject the key if the three cylinders are set to a different number sequence. You can reset the three-digit combination at any time by following the same sequence: open the 3D wooden box, remove the pin block, reset the combination, reinsert the pin block, and the key release mechanism is now set to the new combination.

Forgot the combination? Oh no, now what? Don't worry, our designers and engineers have you covered. There are two different ways to access the contents of the box without the combination. You can open the Book of Secrets by simply detaching the back panel. Insert a flat tool like a screwdriver or metal ruler into the slot between the back panel and the box, then gently pull the panel in several places to lift it up and out, allowing you to access the box. You can now reset the combination to a three-digit code that's easier to remember. You can also play safe cracker by discovering the combination by feel. Press the key-opening lever with your finger, holding it lightly, then spin each cylinder in turn. You'll feel the correct number on each drum turn a little tighter than the others, and the lever move slightly under your finger as the correct number clicks into place. When the last cylinder is set to the correct number, the indicator on the edge changes from closed to open. The release key is now engaged.

Everything you need for assembly is included in the kit, including a piece of sandpaper to smooth out burrs on the wooden parts and a piece of wax to lubricate the moving parts.
