Closely associated with the amphibious operations of the Allies during the Second World War, from Anzio to the beaches of Normandy, the Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) are probably the most famous landing craft in history. The LCM-3 version is certainly among the most successful and effectively used. Its design was simple and extremely rational. The large forward ramp allowed for the rapid landing of a squad of fully equipped infantrymen as well as a 30-ton Sherman medium tank. The armor was succinct, protecting the diesel engine which allowed a maximum speed of 8 knots and the crew necessary for navigation and close defense consisting of four men.
