The Leopard 1 tank, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the armored troops of the Federal Republic of Germany and various Western armed forces during the period of the "Cold War". The role of the Leopard was essential, having the task of confronting the multitude of tanks that could be deployed by the armies of the Warsaw Pact. It was armed with the very reliable 105mm L7 gun that could fire different types of ammunition. The A5 version was a major improvement with the adoption of a modified turret capable of accommodating new computerized target identification and fire control systems. Polycarbonate composite armor plates were also added, greatly increasing protection and blow resistance.
