The Porsche 911 GT1 debuted in 1996 and was designed to compete in high-profile endurance races. Its wide, low-slung silhouette, refined in a wind tunnel, featured design elements such as a roof air intake, domed fenders and a downforce-enhancing rear diffuser. While the headlights and taillights still resembled those of the production 911, it is no exaggeration to say that it was a purely sporty version, heavily modified: the rear of the chassis was redesigned as a space chassis, and a 3,166 cc flat-six engine was housed in the center; Two turbochargers combined produced an impressive 640 hp. Its double-wishbone suspension was equipped with horizontal shock absorbers and pushrods. In its first 1996 season, it secured second and third places in what is perhaps the most famous event on the calendar, also taking victories at Brands Hatch and Spa.
