The M24 Chaffee tank was deployed in US Army units from 1944 onwards, replacing the older M3/M5 Stuart. The M24's configuration was very different from its predecessor and proved extremely effective, to the point that it can be considered one of the best light tanks ever built. Agile, robust, and reliable, it was, for a "Light Tank," well-armed, with its 75mm M6 gun with 48 rounds available. The tank's armament was completed by two 12.7mm Browning machine guns. It was also successfully used in close infantry support missions and for forward reconnaissance. During the conflict, effective cooperation developed between M24 units and more heavily armed armored vehicles, such as the Sherman in its various versions.
