The M47 Patton medium tank was developed and deployed in American armored units in the first half of the 1950s. Compared to its predecessors, including the M46, it offered significantly superior performance, with better protection and increased firepower, provided by the 90mm M3 cannon mounted in the turret. The tank weighed approximately 46 tons in combat order and was equipped with a powerful air-cooled Continental V12 engine, developing 810 horsepower, which allowed it to reach a speed of 45 km/h. In addition to the United States, it was used by many NATO armies during the Cold War. Reliable and robust, it served for many years in the armored units of several European armies until the 1980s. It also saw action in various conflicts, from the Middle East to the Indo-Pakistani War.
