During World War II, American forces developed the M10 tank destroyer with a 76.2mm gun, which proved ineffective against heavily armored German tanks such as the Tiger and Panzer. Based on the M10A1 chassis and equipped with a 450hp gasoline engine, the M36 featured a new open-topped turret and a 90mm gun. The M36 was first used on the Franco-German border in October 1944. By the time Germany surrendered in May 1945, over 1,000 M36s were deployed in 21 battalions and contributed to the advance of the Allied forces.
