The GMC trucks coming off the boats and rolling onto the beaches during the Normandy landings will always appear as a symbolic image of the Liberation, as it is true that an army in the field cannot exist without means of transport and logistical support.
Built in over 800,000 units , the GMC, a 2.5-ton, 6-wheel-drive canvas-covered truck, was to trucks what the jeep was to light vehicles. The two main models were the CCKW-352, known as the "short wheelbase," and the CCKW-353, known as the "long wheelbase," the subject of this model. Its distinctive silhouette was a familiar sight in every theater of operations.
Its ability to fulfill its mission in the most difficult conditions, thanks to its legendary robustness and power, made it a universally admired vehicle. The GMC's career continued long after the Second World War, in both civilian and military applications.
