In 1962, Renault launched the Renault 8, which, along with the R10, would be the last car with a rear-mounted engine until the arrival of the Twingo III in 2014.

The R8 Gordini model (TYPE R1134) was unveiled at the 1964 Paris Motor Show. It was quickly recognizable in its France Blue 418 livery and double white stripe running the entire length of the car.

The first car to offer accessible sports performance with a production car budget, its oversteering behavior (it drifts at the rear) due to the rear-mounted engine will make it a benchmark for sports driving for experienced drivers but also for all drift enthusiasts.

Amédée Gordini, nicknamed "the wizard," transformed the original engine block ( a 956cc cast iron Cléon) by increasing its displacement to 1108cc (77.5 hp DIN / 95 hp SAE). The most significant modifications were the adaptation of a hemispherical cylinder head (V-shaped valves and central spark plugs) and the addition of two twin-choke horizontal Solex carburetors.

With a top speed of 170 km/h, the R8 Gordini was one of the fastest cars of its time.

In September 1966, the R8 Gordini 1300 appeared, equipped with a 1255 cc engine producing 88 hp DIN / 103 hp SAE. The gearbox now had 5 speeds and the top speed was increased to 175 km/h.

One month after its presentation, the R8 Gordini would continue to rack up victories for almost 10 years (Tour de Corse, Rallye du Maroc, Australian Rally Championship, Ivory Coast Rally, Portugal Rally).

The last R8 Gordini was manufactured in May 1970.

A total of 11607 Renault Gordini cars were produced, including 8981 of the 1300 version alone.

A true icon of a generation, the Gordini now commands prices comparable to high-performance sports cars packed with technology. Its performance, however, remains undiminished.
