It was in 1939, at the request of the T.W.A. company, that the Constellation project was launched. This company wanted a 40-seater transport aircraft. The prototype first flew on January 9, 1943. With the rule of war, the Constellation began its career under a military name, the C-69 and thus equipped the AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND of the U.S.A.A.F. After the war, the first two civilian customers were, the T.W.A. and the PAN AMERICAN. The latter was the first to implement its Constellations, on the New York-Bermuda line. The T.W.A., for its part, inaugurated on 6 February 1947 the first united states-europe link.
