The Curtiss P-40 E is the successor to the Hawk 81 A, better known as the Tomahawk. It made its first flight on 22 May 1941 as the Hawk 87 A. An order for 540 units was placed by Great Britain, which would use it as the Kittyhawk 1A, as well as the Commonwealth countries, and a second for 1500 aircraft for the US Army Air Force, which would use it as the Curtiss P-40 E and sell them to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease Act.
