The North American P-51 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most famous aircraft in the history of military aviation and is considered the best piston-engined fighter of World War II. The most widespread version, the P-51D, was armed with six 12.7mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings and was characterized by its teardrop-shaped canopy. Towards the end of the war, it was widely used on the European front to escort heavy bomber formations, but also as a fighter-bomber for ground support. The most famous American aces of World War II flew the Mustang, exploiting its performance and proving its operational capabilities.
