In 1947, K.L.M. was the first European airline to order the LOCKHEED L-49 Constellation. Shortly afterwards, it acquired the L-749 version. K.L.M. will operate a total of 26 LOCKHEED L-49 / L-749 aircraft. They mainly made long-haul flights to North America, the Caribbean, the Far East and Australia! In 1950, the L-749 aircraft delivered in 1947/48 were converted to the L-749A standard, with a different exhaust system and landing gear. Thanks to the new exhaust system, the speed has been slightly increased, from 8 to 16 km / h. After the introduction of the DOUGLAS DC8 in 1960, the remaining 10 Constellations were withdrawn from service. Five of them were sold for scrapping in 1962/63, and the rest were sold to new owners. The K.L.M. took into account the PH-TDK "Amsterdam" on November 9, 1948. On March 3, 1954, "Amsterdam" was re-recorded PH-LDK. The aircraft was withdrawn from service on 8 November 1958, and finally scrapped on 25 June 1963.
