The RF-4E is a tactical reconnaissance version of the famous two-seat McDonnell Douglas Phantom II multirole fighter. Developed specifically for export, it combined the reconnaissance systems of the RF-4C with the aerodynamic structure and reinforced engines of the F-4E. The Luftwaffe received the first examples in the early 1970s and became one of the first operators, along with Japan, Iran, Israel, and Greece. Many reconnaissance components and systems were also produced in Germany. The RF-4E was capable of performing all-weather missions and mapping the ground with great efficiency and accuracy thanks to its infrared sensors, target acquisition systems, and imaging devices.
