The Dassault Mirage III (French pronunciation: ) is a family of single-seat, single-engine combat aircraft developed and manufactured by the French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation. It was the first Western European fighter aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight.

In 1952, the French government issued its specifications, requesting a light, all-weather interceptor. Among the candidates was Dassault with its model, initially known as the Mirage I. After favorable flight tests during 1954, during which speeds of up to Mach 1.6 were reached, it was decided that a larger follow-up aircraft would be needed to carry the necessary equipment and payloads. A proposal for an enlarged Mirage II was considered, as well as the MD 610 Cavalier (3 versions), but was rejected in favor of a more developed design, powered by the new Snecma Atar afterburner turbojet, designated Mirage III. In October 1960, the first major production model, designated Mirage IIIC, made its maiden flight. The first operational deliveries of this model began in July 1961; a total of 95 Mirage IIICs were obtained by the French Air Force (AdA). The Mirage IIIC was soon followed by many other variants.
