While it is often the pilots who are most praised for their role in defending the United Kingdom against the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain in the late summer of 1940, they could never have accomplished this mission alone. Alongside the pilots, many men and women from across the UK served as ground personnel, carrying out the vital tasks of refuelling, rearmament and servicing fighter jets between sorties. This task was particularly perilous during Luftwaffe attacks and hit-and-run raids on RAF airfields. In addition to refueling and rearming Spitfires and Hurricanes with thousands of .303 rounds of ammunition, these dedicated men and women also repaired damaged fighters, started engines before sorties, and assisted pilots despite the hectic pace of battle. Bombing and strafing attacks claimed many lives and many other ground personnel were wounded, but they continued, both during the battle and for the rest of the war, often working under the blazing sun and freezing cold, thus ensuring the RAF had the means to defend Britain's skies.
