Messerschmitt Bf109E-4 1/48 Hobby Boss

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft, designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s. It was one of the first truly modern fighters of the era, featuring all-metal monocoque construction, an enclosed canopy, and retractable landing gear. After its first taste of combat in the Spanish Civil War, the Bf 109 was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II, during which time it formed the backbone of the German Luftwaffe.

The E-4's engine-mounted cannon was eventually abandoned. The wing guns were replaced with MG FF/Ms, providing a higher rate of fire. The cockpit canopy was also modified. First appearing in July 1940, it played an important role in the Battle of Britain. German fighter loss figures show 249 E-1s, 32 E-3s, and 344 E-4s lost during the second half of 1940. It would have been relatively easy to retrofit a 109E-3 to E-4 specifications, and this is likely what happened to many older fighters.
