The Supermarine Spitfire (meaning "fire-breather" in English, but also figuratively "hot-tempered" or "shrew," hence also "dragon") was one of the most widely used single-seat fighters by the RAF and the Allies during World War II. It led to a diversification and multiplicity of versions never before seen in the history of aviation.
The Spitfire's elliptical wings gave it a highly recognizable appearance; their slender cross-section contributed to its impressive speed; the brilliant design of chief designer Reginald Mitchell and his successors (he died in 1937) made the Spitfire a favorite among pilots. It served throughout World War II and, in all its variants, saw action in virtually every major conflict.
More than 20,300 aircraft were built and the Spitfire remained in service until the 1950s.
