In 1956, France and England simultaneously began studies for a supersonic transport aircraft. These studies culminated in 1961 in two separate projects, which merged on November 29, 1962, into a single project involving four main companies: Aérospatiale, BAC, Rolls-Royce, and SNECMA. The first prototype, number 001, rolled out of the Toulouse factory on December 11, 1967. Concorde had already shattered altitude (21,000 m) and speed (March 2.2) records. On January 21, 1976, a new era of scheduled commercial air travel began, operated by Air France and British Airways.
