The Constellation project was launched in 1939 at the request of TWA. Under the military designation C-69, the prototype Constellation flew on January 9, 1943. After World War II, ten C-121 Constellation aircraft were made available to the US Air Force for Military Air Transport Service (MATS) operations. The C-121 was a version of the Model 749. The seats could be removed and replaced with stretchers for emergency evacuation. These C-121s actively participated in the Berlin Airlift, which began in May 1948, transporting cargo from the United States to Europe. This cargo was then flown to West Berlin in smaller aircraft.
