Derived from an R5 Alpine hull modified by the bodybuilder Heuliez, the Renault 5 Turbo was presented as a "concept car" at the 1978 Paris Motor Show. Approved in group 4 on September 1, 1980, the first participation of the prototype had taken place a few months earlier at the Giro d'Italia.
