It is often believed that Renault's first front-wheel drive was the Renault 4 (ref Heller 80759) launched in 1961. It's not true. This is the Estafette utility from 1959. The French competitors at the time were the Peugeot D3A/D4B and the Citroën Type H (ref Heller 80768). In Germany, VW offered the rear-engined Combi. Ford had the Taunus-Transit with aesthetics very close to that of the Estafette, but with front engine and rear-wheel drive. The Estafette will take over from the Citroën the front-wheel drive releasing a large flat cargo floor, the four independent wheels, the sliding side door and the three-leaf rear door. It was initially produced in a van with an 800 kg payload, then a 1000 kg van from 1965, with flat or raised roof and short or long wheelbase. Produced until 1980 in more than 500,000 copies, the Estafette has become a symbol of its time.
