The JLTV or Joint Light Tactical Vehicle was a new U.S. military program, launched to partially replace the aging HMMWV fleet of utility vehicles. The new vehicle is intended for the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Special Forces.
The M1278 is a heavy weapon carrier. This is a basic 4-door general-purpose version of the JLTV family. It has an armored M2 heavy machine gun post on the roof. Alternatively, it can be equipped with various remote-controlled weapon stations, armed with the 12.7mm M2 heavy machine gun, or even a 30mm light chain machine gun.
M1279 is a utility version. It is a 2-door pickup with cargo space in the back. It can carry various supplies and goods.
The M1281 is a close-quarters combat weapon carrier.
