During the early stages of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the Marder II anti-tank self-propelled gun countered the crushing Russian T-34 and KV-2 tanks. In 1941 it became clear that not only the Panzerkampfwagen III and IV, but also the 5 cm Pak 38 did not have enough power, and the 7.5 cm Pak 40 was developed; It could penetrate a 130 mm armor plate at a distance of 1,000 m and at a rate of up to 14 rounds per minute. The Marder II equipped the 7.5 cm Pak 40 with the open-top fighting compartment based on the Panzerkampfwagen II. Production began from mid-1942.
