Model DUKW 2 1/2 ton GMC amphibious vehicle in 1/72 scale from Italeri reference 7022.
Based on the General Motors CCKW-353 21/2 t 6x6 tactical transport truck, an amphibious version was designed to quickly transfer men and equipment directly from the ships to the beach. The mechanical basis was identical to that of the GMC road truck with its 4,400 cc 6-cylinder engine and three six-wheel drive differentials. The DUKW was characterized by its hull welded to make it watertight, reinforced by horizontal ribs. Its effectiveness was the result of its extraordinary versatility and high carrying capacity. Indeed, it could carry 2,400kg of payload, i.e. 25 fully equipped men. DUKWs were widely used on all fronts of the 2nd G.M. by the U.S. Army, Marines, and the armed forces of many Allied nations. They contributed to the successes of the landings at Salerno and Anzio, Normandy on D-Day, at Utah and Omaha Beach, as well as on the beaches of the Pacific.
