More than 5,000 VABs (Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé – Armored Forward Vehicle) are in service in 14 countries across all continents. The VAB, traditionally built as a 4x4 (the only version used by the French Army), is often sold in a 6x6 version for export. Improved off-road capability is the reason for this choice by African countries like Morocco and those in the Middle East. This vehicle has been frequently used in combat and for peacekeeping operations, notably within the UN and NATO. In Bosnia, where 200 to 400 VABs were permanently deployed, the availability rate exceeded 90%, while maintenance was limited to routine interventions. A 300 hp engine and automatic transmission allow the VAB to weigh 16 tons. As with the 4x4 version, numerous improvements have been made: tire inflation and deflation system, reinforced chassis, and modernized steering and dashboard.
