On the advance to the Rhine, 1945:
After the shock of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, the Allied forces continued their offensive in Germany in February 1945. After a series of fierce attacks, American forces broke through the Siegfried Line and crossed the Roer River. By early March 1945, Allied forces were positioned along the Rhine, Germany's last geographical line of defense. In a daring and now famous dash, an armored force was to seize an intact bridge over the Rhine at Remagen. American infantry, particularly that of the First Army, were the primary targets of the fighting in this campaign.
