Gangster car.
Uncontrolled growth and oversaturation of the American market led to the Great Depression, which began with the stock market crash of October 1929. This economic crisis fueled a rise in banditry, with bank robberies becoming particularly notorious. These crimes were made more efficient by the gangsters' use of vehicles. As one analyst observed in the 1920s: "The automobile and good roads have greatly increased certain types of crime. We are now seeing a new type of automobile bandit appearing who depends entirely on his car, whether robbing banks, burglarizing houses, or assaulting pedestrians." The criminals' success was further increased by Thompson submachine guns, which offered rapid-fire capability and were nicknamed "Tommy guns." These weapons cost around $200, about half the price of a Model A Ford.
