The 205 is a small car produced from 1983 to the end of 1998 by the French automaker Peugeot. Its development began in 1978. The sporty 205 GTI followed in 1984. By 1986, the GTI boasted 128 hp (94 kW) from its 1.9-liter engine and a top speed of approximately 200 km/h, all while weighing a mere 921 kg. Peugeot's styling department, La Garenne, headed by Gérard Welter, was responsible for the design. Launched in 1984 to compete with the Golf GTI, the small sports car became an object of desire for more than just an entire generation of young French people. Sobriety was still a foreign word in the true sense of the term in the 80s, with larger aluminum rims and fender flares finished with red decorative stripes, the 205 GTI, available as a two-door model, stood out visually from other Peugeot 205s. After a Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 won the World Rally Championship in 1985, the 205 GTI embodied the ultimate in fashion.
