When the new little Renault appears 1961 at the Paris Motor Show at the end, it is a revolution! The manufacturer Renault unveils a new concept, a new way to approach the car.
Everything in the Renault 4 is revolutionary for a car in its segment. There is a four economic cylinder with a sealed maintenance-free cooling system, a traction before (a first for Renault on a passenger car), a platform on which is bolted body, four wheels with suspension independent, four real seats with removable front and rear seats, and especially a tailgate which greatly facilitates the safe loading.
Upon his first vintage 1962, the limousine 6 ice will be called R4L in opposition to the R3 and R4 basic models. Therefore in everyone's mind, the Renault 4 will remain a "4L" regardless of his finish or official names chosen by the manufacturer.
It will be so until its demise in December 1992. It will be more than 30-year career for one of the largest national automotive success stories. And more than eight million copies sold worldwide.
The GTL model will be a great success when it was introduced in 1978. This new model allows the Renault 4 sneak in modern traffic then. To achieve this it can count on an engine 1108 cm3 of 34 HP DIN and a four-speed box well staged. The GTL 19 200 francs and will quickly emerge as the best of the Renault 4 never commercialized.
