The Orient Express is a luxury train that has connected Paris, Vienna, and Venice since 1883. In the 1920s, with the involvement of decorative artists, the "Orient Express" style reached its zenith. After several route changes, two world wars, and a decline in its prestige during the Cold War, the daily Direct Orient Express service to Istanbul and Athens was discontinued.
Since 1982, a new luxury train, the Venice-Simplon-Orient-Express, has taken over the route from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Paris to Venice, via Innsbruck or Vienna. The Orient-Express brand, however, remains the property of SNCF.
