Build this wonderful AEC Bus B-type model kit step by step. It will allow you to spend long and enjoyable hours of creative leisure building a faithful replica of the original vehicle with all the details.
Type B buses were built in Walthamstow to replace Type X vehicles. The Type B had a capacity of 34 people – 16 inside and 18 on the open upper deck – and is considered the first mass-produced bus. It began carrying passengers in 1911, and it is estimated that nearly 2,500 vehicles were in operation by 1913.
This model was designed by Frank Searle, chief engineer of the LGOC. It featured a wooden frame, steel rims, a worm gear, and a chain drive. Its top speed was 16 kilometers per hour, exceeding the legal speed limit of 12 km/h at the time, although some examples could reach 30-35 km/h under favorable conditions.
A total of 900 buses of this type were used to transport troops to the rear during the First World War. The Imperial War Museum preserves one of these buses, the B 43, which is known as Bill Ole, a famous contemporary cartoon character.
The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden, London, houses the original B 340 which has been restored.
Get excited and let yourself be transported back to the time when these wonderful buses ran on the streets.
