" Cable cars are a true symbol of the city of San Francisco . The first cable car of this type was put into service in London. It was on August 2, 1873, that Andrew Smith Hallidie tested the first cable car on Clay Street in San Francisco . One hundred and thirty-six years later, these attractive vehicles continue to travel the city streets and are an integral part of local daily life."

The system relies on a cable that is pulled at a constant speed by a stationary motor along the entire route. The tram starts moving when a fastening device called a coupling is connected to the cable by pressure. Releasing this pressure, combined with the action of the brakes, brings the vehicle to a stop.

There are currently two cable car fleets in operation. One is the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason fleet. The other is the California Street fleet, which includes tram number 60, the model we have reproduced. This tram was manufactured in 1998 by MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway) and entered service in 2002.

This vehicle is based on the original model built in 1906 by John Hammond & Company for the California Street Cable Railroad Company. After the earthquake and fire of April 1906, it was rebuilt in Hammond's renovated workshops as No. 16 before being assigned No. 60 by MUNI in 1957. A new version retaining the original roof and seats was produced in 1968-69 at MUNI's Elkton workshops.
