The Tamiya 58757 Volkswagen Dune Beetle Cross is a 1/9 scale electric radio-controlled car kit. It replicates a Volkswagen Beetle prepared for American off-road racing and is based on the new rear-wheel-drive BB-02 chassis. This RC buggy combines an instantly recognizable Beetle silhouette with a design intended for handling soft terrain and off-road tracks.

The polycarbonate body, ready to be painted and decorated, features significantly widened front and rear fenders and a removed rear engine cover, reminiscent of off-road racing Beetles. The kit is completed with a roll cage, window net, fire extinguisher, gearshift, steering wheel, air filter, pulley, muffler, and exhaust pipes. These elements enhance the realistic appearance of the assembled model.

Volkswagen Beetles modified for off-road use are an iconic part of Baja preparation and desert racing. Their distinctive bodywork, flared fenders, and long-travel suspension have inspired numerous RC model creations. With this Dune Beetle Cross, Tamiya offers a modern radio-controlled interpretation of this world, featuring a detailed body and a chassis designed for off-road driving.

The BB-02 chassis features a two-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive design. The motor is located at the rear, and the battery pack is positioned longitudinally within the chassis. The radio and electronic equipment is installed beneath the pilot and co-pilot figures to maintain a realistic cockpit appearance. A hatch located under the chassis allows the battery pack to be installed or removed from below.

Its floor incorporates front and rear wheel arches designed to better protect the model's components from dust and debris. The sealed gearbox features a ball differential , while the drive shafts have protective boots. This design contributes to its suitability for the dusty environments encountered on dirt tracks.

The four-wheel independent suspension offers a choice of two front suspension setups. The first configuration uses double wishbones , a design inspired by solutions used on full-size vehicles and adapted to relatively flat dirt surfaces. It prioritizes good straight-line stability thanks to long arms and increased suspension travel. The second configuration employs a double wishbone front suspension , with long arms designed to maintain contact with the ground and enhance stability during jumps on off-road courses.

At the rear, the BB-02 uses swing arms. The adaptive shock absorbers are designed to limit oil leaks: as the piston moves, the seal changes shape, allowing air to pass through its orifice. The hexagonal hub wheels are fitted with ribbed front tires for directional stability and square-knobbed rear tires for traction.

The radio-controlled model also includes seated pilot and co-pilot figures with full-face helmets and specific arms. Both figures, along with their name stickers, depict women. The headlights and taillights are reproduced on the bodywork. Molded black light housings are provided for installing LED lights, sold separately.

The Tamiya Volkswagen Dune Beetle Cross 58757 is a kit designed for modelers who want to assemble, paint, and decorate the body themselves. It requires the addition of RC equipment, an electronic speed controller, a motor, a battery pack, a charger, and suitable paints. The chassis is compatible with a standard-size or low-profile steering servo. The use of a Tamiya 540-size brushless motor is recommended.
