Stemming from a maritime program trying to strengthen the diversity of the vessels of the naval forces of LOUIS XVI in the eighteenth century, the SUPERB, long developed, was put in construction in 1782 on the plans of the engineer Jacques-Noël Sané. Classified among the ships of 74 guns, it has the particularity of having a hull lined with copper. This practice of dubbing had become widespread from 1770. It allowed the hull, and in particular the hull, not to be attacked by worms and other parasites. An added advantage was that the ship gained a few knots of speed. The SUPERB is equipped with 74 guns distributed as follows: 28 of 36 pounds on the 1st battery, 30 of 18 pounds on the 2nd battery and 16 of 8 pounds on the gaillard. Like all 74-gun ships, the SUPERB did not have a mantlet on the second battery. It should be noted that the figurehead of this boat represents a crest that was a principle imposed as a regulation in 1785. Introduced into the Naval Army of Admiral Villaret De Joyeuse, it suffered a violent storm in January 1795. This damaged many ships of this army, including the SUPERB.
