Yamato was a Japanese battleship during World War II. It was then the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever built. Its construction was linked between 1937 and 1941 at the Kure shipyard (Hiroshima) in the greatest secrecy. She was commissioned on 16 December 1941. Its artillery was 46 centimeters in caliber, the largest used so far for breech-loading guns on ships. The Yamato, considered "unsinkable" finally sank on April 7, 1945, after suffering an attack for more than 2 hours by a total of 386 aircraft, which seriously damaged it with 13 torpedoes, 8 bombs and many close shots.
