The oil tankers La Seine and La Saône were laid down in 1939, but their construction was quickly halted by the war. Finally commissioned at the end of the forties, they will serve for some time on the line to Iraq, before being taken over by the French Navy for its own use. They will be transformed into auxiliary oiler replenishment vessels (PRE), this complete overhaul requiring the installation of suspension gantries for the fuel handles. As this modification proved successful, both ships will now be integrated into carrier battle groups and will participate in numerous exercises, including missions in the Pacific Ocean as part of Force Alpha. This operation was mainly intended to protect the French nuclear test sites of Mururoa and Fangataufa, and will continue for many years, the careers of the two tankers taking place largely during this period. Overtaken by units with much superior performance, the Seine and the Saône will leave the ranks of the French Navy in the mid-seventies and will be condemned shortly after.
