U-Boat Biber submarine model in 1/35 scale from Italeri reference 5609.
The "Biber", the best-known "pocket" submarine used by the Kriegsmarine at the end of the Second World War, was quickly developed: its design began in February 1944 and the first examples set sail only six months later. Measuring just 9 meters long, it had a range of 240km. It could reach a maximum speed of 6.5 knots on the surface and 5.3 knots submerged. The Biber could be armed with two 530 mm torpedoes, mounted on the outside of the hull, or two mines. Her crew consisted of one person. The Kriegsmarine's mission was to patrol the coasts to defend against an increasingly likely Allied invasion. From 1944 to the end of the 2nd G.M., the Kriegsmarine received and commissioned more than 300 Bibers.
